PHAR Moms Tell Us How Both Can Co-Exist
Working Moms. We walk amongst them, some of us are raised by them, and some of them we work with.
Martha Ivester, Google Exec and Mom of 3, had “Hire a Mom!” in the title of her speech at her TEDxNashville session back in 2018. The almost 20-minute long speech went through the motions of how she got back into the workforce by harnessing her experiences of being a stay-at-home mom. Spoiler alert! The skills that big companies are looking for, are skills that moms already work on every single day.
In celebration of Mother’s Day, a holiday we believe should be celebrated more than once a year, we dip our toes into what it’s like to straddle on both sides of family and career from the perspective of PHAR Moms. They share with us three common things:
1. BEING A WORKING MOM IS A BALANCING ACT
WHEN ASKED, “WHAT ARE THE PRESSURES OF BEING A WORKING MOM?”, FINDING BALANCE WAS THE MOST COMMON ANSWER.
“Balancing time or switching roles during the day, and trying not to fail at any of these roles – mom, career woman, wife” writes Lily, mom to Logan who is 2
“Balancing time for work and my child, it’s not easy!” – Isabelle, mom to 10-year-old Antonia
This should come as no surprise. Economies are tough, competition is fierce, and juggling work, childcare, while supporting the family income is an everyday struggle.
Their motivation? You’ve guessed it - their kids. This brings us to #2:
2. WORKING MOMS RAISE INDEPENDENT KIDS
NOT BEING TIED TO THE HIP WITH KIDS 24/7 BRINGS A POSITIVE EFFECT ON CHILDREN. IT TEACHES THE CHILD TO FIND WAYS TO DO THINGS ON HIS OR HER OWN, AND IT DEVELOPS SELF-SUFFICIENCY.
Read on below for more on what the kids benefit from having a working mom according to our PHAR Moms.
“Having a profession, and witnessing a working mom teach children to set goals for themselves, and to do better in life. It also teaches both mom and child to value time with each other” – Thessa, mom of 4
Aiza, mom to 4-year old Sam adds, “She values the time that I spend with her (literally glued to me).”
Being a good role model, and valuing time spent with each other seem like great trade-offs.
3. THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A WORKING MOM? THERE’S NOT ONE THING, IT’S EVERYTHING.
“I can provide for my children. I can now give them things I wished I had during my childhood.” - Lhene, mom to 13-year old Sasa, and 6-year old Iyah
“I can grow in my career while I see my child grow together with me.” - Lily
“I can spoil my daughter, and give her everything I can.” - Aiza
“I feel good making something of myself while helping my kids make something of themselves.” - Thessa
“It brings out the best in me. I am able to pursue my career and goals. Plus, I am able to provide for my family.” - Isabel
In this day and age, and as these PHAR Moms prove, Working Moms can have it all.
With a good support system at home and at the office, other Moms can have it all too.
It just depends on what all means for you.
From your PHARmily, Happy Mother’s Day!
